Sunshine, tan skin, sleeping in, bonfires, mosquito bites, sno cones: all the things that make summer, summer. There’s so much liberty and bliss that comes with the end of the school year, so much excitement and enthusiasm to be free of responsibility; but summer can be so much more. This summer, I took a week out of my relaxation time to volunteer at Holy Family Camp- a Christian based camp for adults with special needs. The week was full of early mornings and included some stressful afternoons, but its impact on me rested so much deeper. Spending seven days at the complete service of another individual is something we all need to do at some point in our lives; the perspective shift it produces is dramatic. Not only did that week enable me to realize how blessed I am with good health and the ability of independence; but it also made me realize just how much I take for granted and just how pessimistic I can be. I was surrounded by many who were less fortunate than I, but so much more positive and joyful; they realized that although we all have struggles, our blessings outweigh these tenfold. That week granted me the ability to see the joy in every situation, not take anything for granted, and not be afraid to stand out, and be yourself. Although I was assisting with the campers that week, I know that they provided me with more gifts then I could’ve ever give them.
