As president next year, Rosa hopes to increase faith, unity

Grace Rosa was “filled with joy” to be elected class president for next school year. She shares her plans in an interview with Flyer staffer Maria Robben.

1. What was your first emotion when you found out you were going to be class president of the 2020-2021 school year?
My first emotion is I was thrilled. My heart was beating fast and I had such a wide smile on my face. I was filled with joy knowing that all the hard work that I put in the past two years had helped me finally be able to reach my goal. I was and am so excited to take on this adventure and I feel so blessed that God blessed me with this amazing and important position.

2. What are some major changes you plan on making as president?
I want to be a lot more hands on with the house captains and coordinators next year. The specifics aren’t finalized but something that is a possibility is I would like to rotate around the houses and devote a week with each house. I would be in there either 2 or 3 days of the week so that I could get to know the people of the house better and be able to observe some of the issues that may be occurring in the house that I can help address. I would also like to meet with the coordinators and their deans a month before each of their events and discuss what their game plan is and see how it is that they need me to help. I want to go to them rather than have to wait and have them come to me every time they need help. Another change is I would like to come up with a schedule that would have each of the houses rotate and spend a house time with one of the other houses from their community at least once throughout the year. This will help everyone get to know not just the people in their house well, but also the people in their community. I feel like in a lot of communities when the students are all put together a lot of them don’t know most of the people in their house. I’m hopeful that with this change, relationships will grow outside of just the house and into the whole community.

3. What are some minor changes you plan on making as president?
Next year I really want to help make faith more of a priority throughout the community system. I know that in some communities they have a good system of incorporating faith into a weekly activity outside of community mass, but I also know that in most of the communities their hasn’t been a big focus on faith in the past. I want to help fix this by having the coordinators write our goals and plans on how they are going to work with the house captains to have a small faith centered activity in each house at least once a week. I also want the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior leader positions into having more of a role in the community system. This year each of the coordinators will have to come up with one small task all the leaders do consistently throughout the year. This will help the leaders be able to get to know what their role in the system looks like while still allowing them a lot of creative wiggle room to do whatever they want to do with their position.

4. What were some mistakes that were made this year that you would do differently next year?
I feel like I found myself going through the motions and only doing the tasks required of me and not going above and beyond. Next year I really want to use this position requirements as just the base to grow off of anf to take this position to the next level by being a lot more intentional with making time to spend with each of the houses and the coordinators outside of just the required meetings.”

5. What were some of your strengths this year that you would want to take into next year?
I am a very positive and creative person. This helped me brainstorm new ideas and assist in leading the team even when things were hard, and we were struggling.

6. What are your goals for next school year as president?
My main goal is to incorporate the faith a lot more into the community system and in helping form the leaders of our school into leaders of faith. I want to make strong connections with the house captains and to be able to know all of the houses very well so that I can see what they are doing well and use that knowledge to help out the ones that may be struggling.

7. What did you learn as Vice President last year? What are some things that you would do differently or keep the same?
I learned how different the President position is from the coordinator. In the coordinator position, you have a list of goals and tasks that are essentially handed to you once you get your job and you spend the majority of your time working on getting one of those tasks done. The president position is very different because it allows you a lot of room for interpretation. You are able to take it in really any way you want. The list of tasks is a lot smaller than those of the coordinators, so you are able to focus your time and energy on the different issues that you find most pressing at Carroll. I’m very grateful that I got to work with Levi and witness his take on the position and I am very excited to be able to make this position my own.

8. How will you handle situations that aren’t the easiest to handle?
I will work with Preston and all of the other coordinators to brainstorm different solutions to problems. I will also work on addressing the problem head on and approaching people if they have concerns or comments about the community system. I think if people know that they have a leader that is willing to listen to them, they will be a lot more open to hearing what I have to say. Most importantly, I will be praying throughout the year for Christ to give me and the whole team the wisdom to lead and know how to address problems and the courage to be able to fix them and admit our possible mistakes.

9. Will you have a main focus as class president of the 2020-2021 school year?
My main focus would have to be in helping form all the leaders of the school into the best leaders possible. This includes coordinators, house captains, and house leaders. I want to work with them and be there for them for anything they need to help them grow into leaders of fellowship, fun, and faith.

10. What made you want to run for class president?
I have always loved leading others and helping the people and places around become the best that they can be. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be student body president because I figured that would be the best way for me to serve my school and because it just sounded like a ton of fun. I absolutely love organizing, planning, and scheduling events and that is what this position is all about. I love the teachers and students of Carroll and I want to help make this school even better.

11. What else can we as students look forward to seeing or hearing from you as class president?
I want to work with deans and talk to them about the possibility of bringing the Mardi Gras day back. I also want to brainstorm with the coordinators on how to make this year, in particular, stand out. We lost half of a semester together as a school, so I really just want to help make next year a blast and help increase school unity. When all is said and done, I hope that people will see me as a leader that really does care about the betterment of Carroll and about each individual student and their well-being.
