College football semifinal recap and analysis:

I don’t know about all of you, but over the past handful of weeks my schedule has pretty much been worked around the College Football Playoffs, specifically the star-studded College Football Semifinals. Here’s a breakdown.

Peach Bowl: Oklahoma vs. LSU

This year’s Peach Bowl was considered by many, including myself, to be a major letdown. People across the nation were tuning into this game looking for a major shootout between two Heisman Trophy finalists, but instead, were able to witness a complete embarrassment of the Oklahoma football program. LSU, led by shoe-in No. 1 draft pick Joe Burrow, was able to solidify their case for being the clear odds-on favorites in the race for the National Championship with a highly convincing blowout win against the Sooners. The final score of the 2019 Peach Bowl was 63-28.

Heisman Finalist Jalen Hurts put on a less than stellar performance against the LSU Tigers. He was only able to muster up 217 passing yards and just two short touchdowns on the ground. He looked generally frazzled throughout the contest. This is not a good look for the quarterback that was already projected to fall out of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In my honest opinion, this performance could cause him to not only fall clear out of the first round of the NFL Draft, but fall clear to the back of the second round or even the early third round. Meanwhile, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, the Heisman Trophy winner, was able to put on an amazing performance. He was able to compile 497 total passing yards and a grand total of 7 touchdowns and 0 picks. In my honest opinion, Joe Burrow was able to prove that he is the clear cut number one prospect in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft and will be suiting up as the starting quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals after they select him as the top pick over Ohio State University stud pass rusher Chase Young.

Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State vs. Clemson

This game was, in my opinion, an instant college football classic, played between a 13-1 Justin Fields led Ohio State team and a 12-0 Trevor Lawrence led Clemson squad. Ohio State was able to go up early against the Clemson Tigers, being ahead 16-0 late in the second quarter. But this is when Clemson began fighting their way back into the ball game by punching in two touchdowns late in the second quarter, including a beautiful 67-yard touchdown run by Trevor Lawrence to put the game at 14-16 at half. Clemson was then able to get a screen pass to go for a 53-yard receiving touchdown by Travis Etienne shortly after half. After a quiet third quarter, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields was able to throw a beautiful touchdown early in the fourth quarter that put Clemson up 23-21. The next big moment in the game came with under two minutes left when Clemson got another touchdown from running back Travis Etienne. Clemson would then convert on a two-point attempt, thus giving the Tigers a four point lead. Clemson was then able to get a huge pick with less than a minute left to put the game away. The final score had Clemson winning 29-23, sending them to the National Championship game in New Orleans.

This was one of the greatest football games that I have ever watched! It was consistent back to back action from two consistent college football powerhouses. After this game, Trevor Lawrence, is in my opinion, the early favorite to win the Heisman Trophy next year.

National Championship Predictions:

This year’s national championship game will be played in New Orleans, La., with the Clemson Tigers taking on LSU. I predict another high scoring affair, with two of the top quarterbacks in college football facing off. I could honestly see this game going either way with Clemson having the clear advantage from a coaching standpoint as well as having a lot more experience then LSU, but on the other hand LSU has the advantage from a pure personnel standpoint. This game will come down to which team’s quarterback has enough up their sleeve to outduel the opposing quarterback. Despite Clemson’s 29-game win streak, I do see Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow out dueling Trevor Lawrence by the slimmest of margins. Thus, LSU will win the National Championship in front of their home fans, in their home state of Louisiana.

Final Score: LSU: 35 > Clemson: 32
