Canned Food Drive

Bishop Carroll’s annual food drive, which ended on November 9, 2017, brought the school and their communities together to collect cans that will benefit the poor and disadvantaged, collecting 22,032 cans as opposed to last year’s 14,412 cans.

St. Teresa of Calcutta community collected 3,493 cans, ranking them first in can totals, with St. Philip Neri second with 3,004, and St. Maximilian Kolbe coming in a close third with 2,969 cans. This is the first event the St. Teresa of Calcutta community has won.

The step-up from last year could be due to the different method used to collect cans; last year cans were collected by class, but this year they were collected by each House, with totals going to that House’s community.

“It’s pretty exciting to win. But we’re more excited about all the people we’ll be able to help with the food than winning,” said Teresa of Calcutta community dean Jessica Schippers.

Schippers and co-dean John Barber had their Houses watch a Mother Teresa video about giving, and Schippers said that she thinks the fact that the community focused on why students should give instead of the contest made the difference.

Leslie Carvalho, a student in the St Teresa of Calcutta community, said, “It’s the first time we’ve gotten first in something and I know everyone is really excited to put in more work and do their part. I’m so happy we all came together for such a good cause and even happier we won.”

Ms. Abby Johnsen, community director, updated the total standings of each community after the drive. In first is St. Therese of Lisieux with 260 points, St. Maximilian Kolbe in second with 252 points, third place going to St. Phillip Neri with 248 points, and fourth place to St. Sebastian with 227 points.
