The students had to “measure density using a scale and a graduated cylinder,” according to Jackson Maldonado. They measured the density of water and observed that an egg sinks when placed into the water. They then had to change that density in order to make an egg float, they did so by adding salt and making a different solution.

Mr. Shellhammer says he likes using labs “but not every section has easy labs to do,” so he, and the students, love when they find one to do. The labs benefit the students because “hands on is the best way to learn. It combines many different concepts into one activity,” Shellhammer said.

The majority of students think the labs are a fun and effective way to learn about chemistry see their lessons in action, but a few like them solely because it gets them out of having an assignment to do. “We didn’t have to take notes and we got to talk to our friends, so it was fun,” Said Graycen Wiechman. “My favorite part of this class is getting to do labs and working with partners,” Wiechman also commented.

The students also really love having Mr. Shellhammer as their teacher, and they love his class as a whole. “My favorite part of this class is having Mr. Shellhammer as my teacher.” Said Coby Winters.

“I really like how open our class is; we sometimes have class debates over topics that relate to real-world problems.” Said Maldonado.
