The 2016 Rio Olympics have been a hot topic this month. Whether it be Michael Phelps’ last Olympics, or Ryan Lochte’s controversial misconduct, the Olympics have brought a whirlwind to social media, and Simone Biles’ story has not fallen short.  This first time Olympian, and now 4-time Gold Medalist, has had her name thrown around a lot these past few weeks. When Simone was announced as a member of the US Women’s Gymnastics Team her story was brought to light and her name suddenly became associated with much more than just talent and perseverance. Simone, along with her younger sister, Adria was adopted at a young age by her grandparents after being sent into foster care in result of her mother’s on and off again struggle with substance abuse. She struggled to grow up into a confident gymnast, but her adoptive mother pushed her and eventually she became the fantastic performer and gymnast she is now. Her accomplishments and ability to overcome the struggles of her life have given her a great reputation and she is visualized as a role model for many. Simone has taken over social media as being one of the best athletes to compete in the 2016 Olympics, even having a difficult gymnastics move named after her. But beyond the attention she gets for her achievements, she has also been acknowledged for her humble personality and ability to relate to all other 19 year olds. Simone is active on Instagram and twitter, she shares her “fangirl” moments, and shares photos of her with her family and friends, making her seem like an average teenager. Simone’s story has moved many and she continues to prove herself to be someone to look out for in the 2016
Rio Olympics, and most likely, a few more Olympics to come.
