She might’ve thought she was getting reprimanded, but the situation was, in fact, just the opposite; she was getting recognized by the Diocese for an essay she wrote.

Sophomores in Morality and New Testament classes were asked to write essays. The prompt for the essay was as follows: “You go to a party, and you find unexpectedly that alcohol is available. What should you do?”

The topic addresses the kind of circumstances that many high school students might find themselves in.

When Principal Harshberger delivered the good news, Vasquez was pleasantly surprised, “When I found out it was going to be published, I thought that was really cool. It’s exciting. I’m
honored.”

Sister Marie Therese, who teaches Morality class, was also very impressed by the essay entitled “Consequences.”
“She addressed how a person’s self-confidence can affect one’s decision to drink or not at a party. Indirectly, this teaches that we need to find our value in God and not in other people’s opinion.”

In her essay, Vasquez had a strong opinion about the decisions teens are faced with, “The choices we make and the reason why we make those choices guide us down our paths.”

Consequences

A teenager has many different questions and choices that follow them around day to day. Starting out in the high school world, a freshman tries to find a place where they belong, a place to fit in at. Along the way to find that place they may have done some things that they aren’t too proud of. Then comes sophomore year, teenagers know where they stand, but may not be happy in how they wound up there. The year is full of searching, searching for where they need to stand instead of where they do. They have several choices to make even in a day to day life; at school, at home, with
friends, at a party. When teenagers go to a party most feel it to be harmless, but some when surprised by alcohol are confused and once again begin to question themselves. They question whether they should stay, whether to drink, and whether to lie.

Teenagers are influenced by many things in their lives, but the most important thing is their friends. At a drinking party someone may wish to leave because they feel that it’s not right, but their friend may try to make them stay saying, “Just hang out for a while, you don’t have to drink.” Unfortunately that person will probably stay, but there are a few confident individuals out there who would refuse and go home. However, the majority of people would stay. They may even stay for a number of reasons; some would stay because their friends wished them to, others would even stay to make sure their friend, who was drinking, did not get hurt. For whatever the reason, they do stay, and with that begins the long night of temptations.

Confidence in oneself is something that everyone wants, but something that not everyone has gained. Therefore, people may react differently to situations based on how
much they believe in themselves.  A teenager who stayed at the party because their friend wanted them to is offered a drink; they may lack confidence, fall into pure pressure and begin to drink.
While a teenager who has confidence, and only stayed at the party because they were concerned about their friend could quite easily refuse the drink without
another thought.  This is why it is so hard to find the right friends in high school; because a true friend, even if they were drinking, would respect your decision of not drinking and would stick
up for you.

Teenagers often do the wrong thing because they know it’s wrong and it gives them an adrenaline rush to see if they can get away with it. Often time, teenagers get
caught up in the night, without meaning to, and by the end of the night most have had a drink or two. Some feel bad about it when they get home; they either confess to their parents and take the punishment, or lie to them. Those who lie to their parents feel bad about it, but after a while they begin to become numb toward it because they begin to lie more and more. Those who tell the truth
hope that next time they will be strong enough to resist the temptations.

The choices we make and the reason why we make those choices guide us down our paths. Choices such as staying where we should not be, doing things that we
should not do, and even lying. Whether the path is good or bad depends on our original reasoning. The person who had stayed solely because their friend wanted them to stay had made a ripple affect downward, by the influence of his friend, pure pressure and scared of consequences. He had lost all confidence, began to drink, and lie. The person who had stayed at the party for good reasons, to watch over his friend began the ripple affect upward. He gained confidence, was able to say no to alcohol, and didn’t have to lie to his
parents about where he had been.  As teenagers go through high school they try to find where they belong in the world. Some are able to find it; others are not so lucky and get lost until they can’t even see the light behind them.

“I’m very proud. It’s such an honor,” Principal Vanessa Harshberger said.

When asked about the students’ contribution to winning this award, Charlie Ebright was quoted in saying: “The students have shown a propensity for having a strong work ethic and solid faith.” There are five schools in the diocese that will win the award this year. The other two that have been announced are Magdalen and St. Patrick’s. Two more schools will be announced later this month.

All students arrived back home safely!

6:00 pm- One more hour till home! I can do this!

2:00 pm- Lunchtime! Getting a mashed potato bowl from KFC and some tacos from taco bell! Less than 5 hours away from home!!!

8:00 am – Stopped at McDonald’s for breakfast! Fighting for plug-ins to charge my phone and iPod!

January 24, 2012 7:00am- Woke up on the bus. Apparently we stopped for two hours because the senior bus broke down. But we are back on the road now

4:30- My legs are dead from the March. Getting in the bus and passing out for as long as possible.

1:00pm – Starting the March for Life! We are the Pro-Life Eagles!!

8- at the pro-life rally in DC! Thousands of people here for the babies!

January 23 -6:00 –  Wake up time!

9:20pm- back from church, sitting on the bus, ready to go back to the hotel an
relax! So tired !

4:00 - arriving at the basilica of the national shine of the immaculate conception
for the vigil mass for the pro-life march tomorrow!

12:00- Ben and Jerry’s ice cream time! Even though it’s freezing outside!

 
11:30- Eating an early lunch at La Madeline! It’s so good!

11:00am – Hitting Georgetown! Making a stop at DC Cupcakes later!

January 22 8:00am – Visiting Arlington cemetery!

7:00pm- Night tour will all the memorials in DC! Father Ben decking out his glasses with glow sticks!

6:00pm- at the mall in Washington DC! It’s four floors of craziness! Thankfully I am spending my time at the food court!

4:00pm- Air Museum

2:45pm- At an art park in DC! Mary Jo Peter joining in the ice skating fun at the park!!

1:00pm- Just got done completing our mission at the International Spy Museum! Now eating pizza in downtown DC!

January 20 6:30 am- wake up call. Going back to bed till 7. Then getting up and getting ready in ten minutes to leave for mass at the Basilica!

8:30- Any minute now.. We’re still sitting on a bus…

7:00- Only an hour and a half left on the bus!! Watching Despicable Me to pass the time!

2:00- Stopped at Wendy’s for lunch. There’s a massive line and we are fighting the Kapaun people for the right to the plug ins. The joys of the March!

12:30- I am bored out of my mind. A lemon drop challenge has ensued amongst some March for Lifers and it smells like beef jerky…

10:30- Snow covered ground in Ohio. If only it would snow in Wichita..

9:00- Movie time on the bus! Watching remember the Titans! Classic!

7:10- Stopping at the BK lounge in Indiana for breakfast. It’s surprisingly good. Why don’t I stop here for breakfast more often..?

January 20 3:00 am- it’s 3 o clock in the morning. Why am I not asleep!?

11- Said night prayer, a rosary… hopefully passing out till morning

7:15- Finally actually on the road toward DC!!

5:40- Arrived at Mass at Magdalene. Excited to have Bishop Jackles say the Mass!!
