“I enjoyed seeing my grandma at Mass. It was fun after Mass when we had time to eat cookies and catch up,” Megan Gerken commented.

Katie Helton said, “I felt like the Grandparents Mass was a very great experience. I loved getting to see my grandma, and she was very excited to experience our Mass here at Bishop Carroll and she kept mentioning what a great school BC is.”

“I enjoyed getting to spend time with my grandma. I hardly get to spend time with her so it was nice to just talk,” Rachel Walker said.

Madi Youngers commented, “I liked having my grandma here for Mass because I don’t get to see her a lot. Also, it’s nice to spend time with her and was different than a normal day.”

Jessica Hageman said, “The Grandparents Mass was very enjoyable. My grandma came and we had time after Mass to catch up a bit. I thought that altogether it was successful.”

Sam Hanna filed this story for a feature writing assignment in Journalism class. Look for more such features in the coming days at bcflyer.net.

Experts think that Andrew Luck could be the next great quarterback but Bishop Carroll kids think differently.

Matthew Denning, a junior from BC, thinks that Luck will be a bust.

“The NFL is a lot different than college so it will be tough for him to change,” Denning said.

Everyone knows that Andrew Luck is going to the Indianapolis Colts with the first pick but who are the Kansas City Chiefs going to get? The draft is tonight at 7 on ESPN.

Alex Morgan, a sophomore, said “The chiefs should get RGIII because he is a versatile player and can run and pass.”

Carroll kids will be looking forward to the 11th pick because that is the Chiefs’ spot and the word is from the analysts is that they need a linebacker or an offensive lineman.

One person they are looking at is a quarterback named Ryan Tannehill from Texas A&M. He might fit in if he doesn’t get picked before the 11th pick.

David Decastro is a left guard that will be active because he will be learning from veterans and he will replace them when they get to worn down to play. There are two linebackers that will fit the way the Chiefs defense works: Luck Kuechly from Boston College and Alameda Ta’Amu from Washington. Both would be good for the spot where Derrick Johnson plays but when he gets injured or retires it will be a good idea to have a back-up plan for him with one of these two great defensive stars.

The Chiefs lost one of their best cornerbacks so they might get Stephon Gilmore from South Carolina. He could make an impact with his speed, size, and his ability to make plays when its crunch time.

Students in Sister’s freshman class were assigned to create a board game with the Sacraments as the theme. This was an interactive and creative way for students to learn the details of the seven Sacraments.
Madison Youngers was one of the students who made a board game. Her group created a “Guess Who” styled game.
Youngers said, “It was really fun- something out of the ordinary. It was a fun way to learn the sacraments and study for our test.”
The assignment was well liked by the students and it was a memorable way to learn about the Catholic Church.

Former Carroll star quarterback Blake Bell is really starting to shine in the world of college sports. Last year, the 2010 graduate began to get a taste for the game as he ran the ball on short yardage situations for the Oklahoma Sooners. As the spring season starts, when the offense scrimmages the defense, Bell will be getting more reps in games in order to prepare more for the coming football season.

April 14th was the first game of spring football for Oklahoma. Starting quarterback Landry Jones only participated for 12 plays in order to prevent injury and give ample opportunities to the three backups available to OU. Bell, who is the first backup to Jones, took over after Jones and was sensational.

In the game, Bell showed off his cannon of an arm. He was 14 of 19 passing, which is a 73.7 percent completion rate. On those 14 completions he compiled 179 yards, 12.8 yards per completion. A huge chunk of these yards came on a 60yard touchdown reception to wide out Jaz Reynolds. On the day, Bell had one touchdown and threw no interceptions.

To hear Bell’s press conference after the game, click here. (Once you get to the page, scroll down to the bottom to see the link with Bell).

ESPN gives Bell some love in this recap.

NCAA Tournament Breakdown

Teams to Watch Upset Alert

Kentucky (13)New Mexico State over (4)Indiana

Duke (10)Xavier over (7)Notre Dame

Mizzou (11)Texas over (6)Cincy

Michigan State (10)West Virginia over (7) Gonzaga

Wisconsin (9)Alabama over (8) Creighton

Vanderbilt (7)St. Mary’s over (2)Kansas in 3rd round

Florida State

North Carolina

St. Mary’s

Kansas

South Region

Watch out for an Iowa State win over UConn- Iowa State can shoot the 3 and UConn has the worst 3 point defense. New Mexico State has a chance for an upset over Indiana because Indiana’s star player is out with a torn ACL. Xavier vs. Notre Dame is going to be a good game to watch because Xavier is a very competitive team. Kentucky vs. Duke in the Elite 8 will be a tough match-up because of how young and skilled Kentucky is, although Duke has more experience.

Nick’s Region Winner: Kentucky

Malik’s Region Winner: Kentucky

West Region

Huge upset alert in the Long Beach vs. New Mexico game. Long Beach had a strong finish to the regular season and looks to ring that momentum into the tournament. Virginia vs. Florida will be a good game to watch. Watch for Missouri to make a strong run to the Final 4.

Nick’s Region Winner: Missouri

Malik’s Region Winner: Michigan State

East Region

Syracuse was most people’s favorite, but now with Fab Melo out for ineligibility reasons they are now looking to have a tough road ahead. Watch for Vanderbilt and Florida State to make huge runs this year. Look for Wisconsin or Vanderbilt to take out Syracuse in the Sweet Sixteen.

Nick’s Region Winner: Florida State

Malik’s Region Winner: Florida State

Midwest Region

Lookout for St. Mary’s they are a high quality basketball team. Look for them to pull off a win over Kansas in the 3rd round. Belmont also has a chance but look for North Carolina to take the conference.

Nick’s Region Winner: St. Mary’s

Malik’s Region Winner: UNC

WSU Road to the Final 4

They will open with a tough game against VCU, but with a win there they should have no problem beating New Mexico State or Indiana. With a win in the 3rd round chances are they will be playing Kentucky which will be a tough match-up. To beat Kentucky they will need to shoot very well and Garrett Stutz will need to play a great game. Once they make it to the Elite 8 they will probably face Duke unless Baylor can pull something off. To beat Duke Toure Murry will need to shoot very well.

Nicks Final 4 and Champions:

Final Four: Kentucky vs. Mizzou

Florida State vs. St. Marys

Championship Game: Florida State vs. Mizzou

Champion: Mizzou

Malik’s Final 4 and Champions:

Final Four: Kentucky vs. Michigan State

Florida State vs. UNC

Championship Game: Florida State vs. Kentucky

Champion: Kentucky
