This is the first installment of the new faith blog by Junior Grace Kelly. Look for a new post every week here on bcflyer.net.
Last night was the Junior Ring Mass for the Class of 2016. The turnout was better than I had expected and I was so excited to be a part by representing the Pom Squad, but my favorite part of the Mass was Father Ben’s homily. It really struck me because the topic was something that I always have in the back of my mind: “How do you want to be remembered?”
It’s a valid question and it requires some serious thought. When I think of how I want to be remembered as a person once I leave high school, thoughts immediately flood my mind. I even talked to my mom about this last night, telling her I want to be remembered as always being happy and nice to everyone. Now I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always live my life that way, but for me, it’s as simple as that.
Another way to look at this is from a religious perspective. I listen to a lot of Christian music, whether it be Christian pop, rock, or hip hop. And yes, Christian hip hop exists, and I love it. One of my favorite CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) songs is “The Proof of Your Love” by for KING & COUNTRY, a duo consisting of Australian brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone, who’s sister happens to be CCM singer Rebecca St. James. In this monologue version of this song and in the music video, Joel is heard reciting a verse from 1 Corinthians 13. The song uses The Message translation of the Bible, but I am okay with it because the words flow beautifully. I’ve put The Message translation for you below:
“If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.”
That has since become my favorite Bible verse. If you check my social media pages, you’ll find that I’ve cited this verse in my all of my bios. It really inspires you to think how you want to be remembered and how you want to live your life, because where would we be without God’s love? We truly are bankrupt without love.
